Production of high-purity makeup water is crucial for the reliable operation of high-pressure steam generators and energy-related industries, such as electronics and semiconductor manufacturing. Upsets in water quality can cause corrosion and scaling in boilers, leading to failures and shutdowns. Advances in reverse osmosis, microfiltration, ultrafiltration, ion exchange and electrodeionization have improved water treatment, but challenges remain.
