Decoupling the Powertrain: Evolving Execution Models in a Constrained Generation Market
Gas turbine lead times stretching to 2029 and beyond have forced a structural change in how thermal power projects are executed. Owners and developers are now procuring long-lead powertrain equipment directly from OEMs, often before an EPC contractor is engaged, abandoning the traditional single-point-responsibility wrap model in favor of a split-contract structure that fundamentally reallocates risk.
The consequences are practical and immediate: interface management between OEM and EPC becomes the critical path, performance guarantees and liquidated damages must be allocated across multiple contracting parties, and control system integration and thermal performance validation require governance frameworks that most project teams are still developing.
Drawing on recent project case studies, this session examines how owners and EPCs are structuring contracts, managing interfaces, and preserving schedule certainty under this emerging model.
