Mick Mastilovic

Manager Fuels Engineering , TVA
United States

Mick joined the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in 2010 and currently serves as a Manager, Nuclear Fuel Engineering.  He is responsible for fueling TVA's current fleet of seven light water reactors, supporting future nuclear development and overseeing matters related to the Nuclear Waste Fund.  The decommissioning cost estimates and co-production projects for TVA's nuclear power plants are in his work portfolio.  Mick's expertise spans the full fuel cycle, off-specification programs, enrichment of depleted uranium tails and the promise of reprocessed uranium and mixed oxide (MOX) fuels.

In 1992, Mick started his career with the Backcock & Wilcox nuclear service group that merged with Framatome after obtaining his bachelor and master degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Virginia and Carnegie Mellon Uninversity.  He subsequently obtained his Professional Engineer license and an MBA from Cornell University to expand his horizons.  From 1999 to 2002, Mick developed new fossil power and transmission assets for the independent power producing subsidiary of PSEG. Following a renewed interest in nuclear, he went to work for USEC, the uranium enrichment company spun out of the US Department of Energy.  To capture the 2007 uranium boom, Mick joined Virginia Uranium as Vice President of Operations, leading efforts to develop the Coles Hill project, one of the largest deposits of uranium in the United States.

Outside of work, Mick enjoys spending time outdoors with his family and dogs.  He is an avoid history enthusiast and self-described "nuclear tourist".  Mick collects keepsakes such as uranium glass, core samples, and Trinitite.
